Active Hope, developed by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone, is a practice-based framework that supports people in transforming despair into collective, creative action. Also known as The Work That Reconnects (TWTR), it is particularly relevant for facilitators, artists, educators, and community leaders seeking to guide themselves and others through the turbulence of the Great Unravelling—the ecological, social, and spiritual crises of our time.
At its heart is a dynamic spiral process—a cycle that moves through four stages:
Coming from Gratitude
Honouring Our Pain for the World
Seeing with New Eyes
Going Forth
This sequence helps individuals and groups connect more deeply with their feelings, each other, and the living Earth. The spiral creates a generative space where people can experience both the grief and the beauty of our interconnected world, turning paralysis and burnout into empowerment and action. It can be used in short sessions or multi-day workshops, and is adaptable for different audiences and contexts.
The spiral offers a powerful tool - grounding the emotional journey of transition and activating courage, imagination, and relational strength for the work ahead.
